‘Hair Jewellery’ a short story by Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood’s precise narrative style of writing is what attracts one’s attention when reading ‘Hair Jewellery’. A knack only possessed by a few great writers distinguishes this story from others, making it a good read. She illustrates a clear image of the incident just as though looking through a glass window. Her writing also has a humorous touch; she enjoys entertaining the reader through the written words.

‘Hair Jewellery’ is a diary of an emotional woman deprived of riches; who tries to define herself through her clothes. Like a teenage girl she fantasizes about her prince charming whisking her away on his white horse and tries to bring it to life by her love affairs. Events of her story are in tuned to her wardrobe. And by collecting them, she puts in the missing pieces of the puzzle.

Looking at the present, she aspires to have a better life; a happy life with her lover, living in a bungalow and not wearing clothes that are over-sized, too small or need the help of safety pins to stay on. She realizes that she wants him to be a part of her life after her trip to Salem and runs back, only later to find that he will be the one to break her heart.

As the story moves forward circumstances help her realize how unfitting he is her life; after her fantasy is shattered by another woman. Her journal extends on to become a ‘good bye’ letter to her lover. But even after getting married, having kids she still thinks of him. She defines her accomplishments through his eyes. Even though she accepts reality and moves towards becoming an adult; she never lets go of the idea of a perfect man who once betrayed her.
